Four different sizes

Are you traveling alone, as a couple or maybe even as a group of four? For this very reason, the horntools Desert roof tent is available in three different sizes: 140 cm, 165 cm or even 220 cm. It's your choice.

The Desert roof tent comes with a lot: shoe pockets, 8cm high cold foam mattresses, all fastening parts for attaching to your roof rack (works for all common models).

Robust material

The Desert roof tent is made of 280 G canvas. The combination of 65 % polyester and 35 % cotton ensures breathability and a pleasant climate in the tent. Thanks to the robust annex room made of 210 D polyester with a water column of 5000 mm, you are effectively protected from rain. Another advantage in bad weather is the dry entry from below.

Optional annex room

For our Desert roof tent you can also get the right annex room from us to enlarge your living area.

The annex room is attached to the roof tent with sturdy YKK zippers. The inner floor of the spacious annex room is waterproof and you can remove it when you don't need it. The walls protect you from icy drizzle and wind on cold days (the breathable fabric of the annex room, unlike the roof tent, is not completely waterproof) and from the burning sun in summer. What's perfect is that you can open the windows if necessary, but they are then additionally protected by mosquito nets.

Suitable for all vehicle models

Our roof tents are suitable for all vehicle models. All you need is a roof rack (of course we would be happy if you buy one from horntools, but if you already have another roof rack, you are welcome to use that too). The roof tent is then attached to the roof rack. Everything you need is already included in the roof tent. No matter whether T5, T6, Jimny, Ford Ranger, pickup, VW bus, station wagon or Golf - the Desert fits every car. However, please consider the roof load of your car. You can find these in the operating instructions or on the internet. The roof load must be sufficiently high to be able to support the roof tent.

On which car does the Desert fit?

In general, you can mount a roof tent on any car, regardless of whether it is an estate car, SUV, pickup or off-road conversion. The prerequisite is that roof racks are mounted on the car roof. It does not matter whether it is two cross struts as a carrier or a roof rack platform.

Maximum permissible roof load

The permissible roof load specified by the car manufacturer must be observed when selecting a suitable roof tent and subsequent installation. Make absolutely sure that the roof tent including roof rack does not exceed the permissible roof load! This can normally be found in the car handbook or can be obtained directly from the respective manufacturer.

Folding tents are therefore recommended for smaller vehicles with a lower permissible roof load. These usually weigh slightly less than hard-shell roof tents.

But how do you include the people in the roof tent or the luggage in the calculation? When the vehicle is stationary, the weight is distributed over the entire vehicle by the roof rack system and can therefore carry a lot more load when set up. The permissible total weight of the car must be taken into account here, as the weight is distributed over the entire vehicle by the roof rack system. You can usually find this in your vehicle's registration certificate.

Which roof tent size is right for me?

That depends entirely on your personal requirements and the people traveling with you. The smallest version with a width of 120 cm offers space for one adult. There is room for 2 adults in 140 cm. The larger versions are ideal for traveling with child(ren). At 165 cm wide, 2 adults and a child can stay overnight, while the largest version (220 cm) offers enough space for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children).

How long does it take to set up the Desert?

15-20 minutes is all it takes to set up the Desert roof tent and get ready for a good night's sleep.

How fast can you drive with a roof tent?

With a roof tent on the vehicle, the driving characteristics also change - the braking distance becomes longer and the vehicle is less agile. Especially with higher vehicles, rocking movements can also occur. We therefore recommend a speed of 100 km/h with a roof tent. Exceeding 120 km/h can result in higher fuel consumption and damage to the cover.

What else you need:

A fitted roof rack is a prerequisite for fitting a roof tent. As long as the width of the carrier is compatible with the roof tent bracket, you can mount a roof tent on any roof carrier.

Tolles Dachzelt

Natürlich muss man beim ersten Mal mit mehr Zeit rechnen, bis alles aufgebaut ist. Allerdings geht es dann umso schnell und das Zelt ist innerhalb weniger Minuten einsatzbereit.
Die 165 cm Variante bietet sehr viel Platz innen.
Der Abbau geht auch spielend leicht, besonders wenn man zu zweit ist.
Die Transporthülle ist sehr dick und Wetterfest, daher wird das Zelt bei uns jetzt permanent am Auto montiert bleiben.

Qualitativ hochwertiges Dachzelt

Wir hatten das Dachzelt auf einem Mitsubishi Outlander in Gebrauch, 2 Erwachsene + Hund. Das Auf- und Abbauen ist einfach und logisch. Durch das Dachzelt waren wir sehr flexibel, es war schnell alles zusammengepackt und fertig für die Weiterreise. Das Vorzelt war problemlos zu montieren und ermöglichte ein nettes Zusammensitzen, auch bei schlechtem Wetter.
Die Matratzen sind etwas hart, wir haben hier mit aufblasbaren Isomatten Abhilfe geschaffen.
Das Dachzelt ist sehr geräumig und durch die vielen Fenster hat man immer irgendwo die Möglichkeit hinaus zu schauen, je nach Stellplatz sehr von Vorteil!

Dachzelt Desert 220

Wir haben uns, für das Desert 220 entschieden. Für 2 Erwachsene und zwei Kinder von 3 und 7 Jahren, bietet es mehr als ausreichend Platz.
Montiert wurde es auf einen Isuzu DMAX und als Grundträger wurde ebenfalls ein Horntools Navis verbaut .
Die erste Nacht, brachte sogar strömenden Regen mit sich, wir blieben alle trocken und auch das mitgelieferte Zubehör ist top!
Wir sind gespannt auf die kommenden Abenteuer!

Horntools Desert 160

Über 3 Jahre in Gebrauch und sehr intensiv die letzten 1.5 Jahre (Vollzeitreisend) hat uns das Desert 160 zuverlässig begleitet.

Positivpunkte:
- Preis-Leistung
- kleine Fläche auf Dach/grosse Fläche im aufgeklappten Zustand
- zügig aufgestellt, Abbau leicht länger
- gute Durchlüftung über die Fenster - vor allem bei warmen, trockenem Wetter sehr angenehmes Klima im Zelt
- grosses Vorzelt
- Top für Ferien im Süden / mittleres bis gutes Wetter

Minuspunkte (Zeltversion von 2020):
- Wetterfestigkeit (aber allgemein Klappzeltproblematik): bei Wind sehr laut, starker Regen drückt an Seitenwänden rein, Plane über dem Eingang der Treppe ist anfällig für Pfützenbildung
- Feuchtigkeit nach Regen dauert bis alles vollständig trocken ist
- allgemein Klappzelt zwar super für Platzverhältnisse IM Zelt, dafür negativ für Platz vom Auto, da Zelt übers Auto raus ragt und so einiges mehr Platz gebraucht wird für parken

Würden wir es wieder kaufen? Ja - aber: Preis-Leistung ist gut und für ein Ferienzelt absolut empfehlenswert!
Für ein Klappzelt ist es ein gutes Zelt, vor allem um in die Dachzeltwelt hineinzu schnuppern :-).
Es ist kein High-Class-Produkt, aber für uns nach all den Jahren immer noch ein sehr gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis und wir verabschieden uns zufrieden davon.

Wieso wir wechselten: Vorteile eines Hardtops überwiegen (Auf-&Abbau/ Stabilität...) bei Langzeitreisen/Vollzeit. Regen-& Wetterfestigkeit musste für uns besser sein für die kälteren/wilderen Regionen, die wir ansteuern.

Toller Begleiter auf Abenteuern

Tolles Dachzelt! Wir fahren es auf dem alten Defender. Hierfür wird allerdings eine Leiterverlängerung benötigt. Qualitativ gibt es nach einem Jahr Nutzung keine Beschwerden.

Klasse Dachzelt

Ich habe mit dem Desert von horntools schon einige Abenteuer hinter mir und würde es nicht mehr Missen wollen!
Auf und Abbau geht sehr schnell.
Qualität ist super und auch Ersatzteile sind erhältlich.
Jederzeit würde ich mich wieder für dieses Dachzelt entscheiden!

Dachzelt Desert

Wir sind pos. überrascht wie geräumig das Dachzelt ist. Aufbau war auch Recht einfach. Für die Montage von dem Regenüberzug habe ich leider keine Anleitung gefunden.
